The Understory Newsletter, by BeechTree Search

Dear Friends,

It’s been six months since we launched BeechTree, an executive search and strategic advisory firm for climate change issues (see our fact sheet for more about us). As we launch this newsletter, we’re excited to bring you timely thoughts on the landscape of climate resilience, executive search insights, and the bigger picture of how organizations can be best positioned to respond to the risks and opportunities presented by climate change.

What we’ve been up to

Alex Briñas/New America

Informing the dialogue on climate risk and resiliences

BeechTree recently contributed three articles to New America’s Future of Land and Housing program examining how climate change is impacting the housing market, and how policymakers can respond. The first was a blog co-written with Resiliency Company CEO Abby Ross entitled Adapting to the New Reality of Climate Change and Housing. The second and third were written to inform discussion at a New America event on housing affordability, homeowners insurance, and megafires in California. They looked at Climate Change, Housing, and Homeowners Insurance in Florida and Hawaii, respectively, and what lessons California could learn from those states as it develops its own housing policies in the context of climate change.

These pieces are part of our work to help shape a more informed and effective response to the climate crisis. You can find a summary of all three articles here.

Industry recognition

BeechTree is pleased to have been featured in a number of places since our launch. We are partnering with Climate Proof’s People Moves newsletter to showcase new jobs and hires in the climate space. You can view the October edition and subscribe here. Our work was also featured in Startup Colorado’s article on how businesses can conduct climate risk assessments. Our strong partnerships with the climate resilience community are central to our mission of helping organizations build the expert teams and strategies this moment demands.

New York Climate Week

We traveled to New York Climate Week for meetings and events. Our takeaway? We saw people relentlessly fighting for solutions, the perfect antidote to the political drama of the concurrent UN General Assembly. At Climate Week, the focus was squarely on action: from rethinking adaptation finance to deploying Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) effectively to mitigation in the face of soaring electricity demand – this was about doing. This roll-up-your-sleeves ethos is the very reason we created BeechTree. Solutions and talent are one and the same. You can read more about our takeaways here.

Spotlight: Our story

The story of BeechTree is built on our founders’ past—how our experiences in executive search, academia, and government led us to start a new project dedicated to solving the challenges presented by global environmental change. One unforgettable moment from my master’s research in post-earthquake Haiti still sits on my desk: a handful of concrete rubble, once a neighbour’s home, now crushed and repurposed into aggregate by a local entrepreneur to rebuild his community. That moment became a metaphor for how we respond to disaster, rebuild smartly, and choose resilience over resignation. It’s that spirit that sparked the creation of BeechTree: a boutique executive search and advisory firm born to support the people and organizations committed to taking on the world’s most pressing challenges.
